Andy Stitzer has a pleasant life with a nice apartment and a job stamping invoices at an electronics store. But at age 40, there's one thing Andy hasn't done, and it's really bothering his sex-obsessed male co-workers: Andy is still a virgin. Determined to help Andy get laid, the guys make it their mission to de-virginize him.
The screenplay features a great deal of improvised dialogue. Andy Stitzer is a year-old virgin who lives alone, his apartment filled with his collection of action figures and video games. At a poker game with his co-workers David, Cal, Mooj and Jay, when conversation turns to past sexual exploits, they learn that Andy is still a virgin, and resolve to help him lose his virginity.
In a recent interview with Conan O'Brien, Carell revealed that the film he helped cowrite with Judd Apatow was almost sacked because Universal felt that Carell looked like a "serial killer" in early footage. And just that week compiled, they went, 'No, no, no, this is not a comedy. But the shooting continued and Apatow's feature directorial debut became a comedic success, leading to "Knocked Up" and more.

The Year-Old Virgin is a comedy film starring Steve Carell in the title role, and the first film to put director Judd Apatow on the map after television stints with Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. It is the story of Andy Stitzer Carella year-old man who, due to a series of unfortunate mishaps all throughout his youth, never experienced sexual intercourse during his formative years and has lost interest in his adulthood. One night, while playing cards with his friends from the electronics store where they all work, Andy inadvertently reveals that he's a virgin; this initially results in the expected chummy jeers, but shortly thereafter his friends Cal Seth RogenJay Romany Malcoand David Paul Rudd decide to help him lose his virginity.
But Apatow saw the potential to capture comedic lightning in a bottle and allowed his actors to improvise on-camera. The method led to a record amount of film being used during the shoot, but the rewards are obvious. Now, every comedy filmmaker tries to emulate that improvisational tone.
Even Jonah Hill and Mindy Kaling appeared in the movie for just one scene apiece. Andy, who worked in the stock room of a tech store, told his secret to some coworkers who immediately rose to the challenge of getting Andy laid. Keener played Trish, the "hot grandma" who Andy our titular year-old virgin fell in love with over the course of the movie. The actress also played the protagonist for a fictional podcast series called "Homecoming," which was later turned into an Amazon Prime series starring Julia Roberts in the same role Keener had voiced.
